Along the Ponta de São Lourenço Trail ( PR8 ), you'll encounter multiple geosites and points of geological interest, turning this hike into a true open-air classroom where you can observe, interpret, and understand the volcanic, tectonic, and erosive processes that shaped Madeira. The trail is located within the Ponta de São Lourenço Natural Monument, which offers a unique chance to explore the geological origin and evolution of Madeira, a volcanic island on the African Plate. The experience is further enhanced by the constant presence of the Atlantic Ocean and the peninsula's semi-arid environment, which hosts a distinctive landscape and ecosystem found nowhere else on the island.

Tour Details

GENERAL INFORMATION

5-hours tour;
6 kilometers (round trip);
Moderate difficulty;
Pace adapted to the group;
Group size from 2 to 8 participants;

TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC FOCUS

Guided by a Certified Geologist;
Insights into volcanology, tectonics, stratigraphy, and erosive processes;
On-site geological analysis of classified geosites;
Didactic components supported by maps, sketches, digital media, and a printed 3D model.

LOGISTICS

Private transportation included from the municipalities of Ribeira Brava, Câmara de Lobos, Funchal, Santa Cruz and Machico;
Personal accident and liability insurance, in accordance with Portuguese regulations.

REQUIREMENTS

Participants must be in good physical condition and in good health;
Participants must be at least 13 years old and 135 cm tall for transport purposes;
Participants must be 90 years old or younger for insurance purposes;
It's recommended that participants bring and/or wear a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, hiking boots or sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and have enough water and snacks for the hike.
